On November 1, 2023, the National Small Business Association (NSBA) sent the following letter to the newly elected Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, The Honorable Mike Johnson, congratulating him on his election and outlining key priorities for America’s small businesses.
November 1, 2023
The Honorable Mike Johnson
Speaker
United States House of Representatives
H-232, The Capitol
Washington, D.C. 20515Dear Speaker Johnson:
On behalf of the National Small Business Association (NSBA), I would like to wholeheartedly congratulate you on your recent election as Speaker of the United States House of Representatives. While you step in during a particularly tumultuous time, we are buoyed by your ability to unite the Republican Conference and we wish you success in your new role.
As you begin the work of crafting a national agenda on key issues, we urge you to consider the critical role of America’s small businesses. These small companies represent over 99 percent of all businesses in the nation, and employ nearly half of all private sector workers, yet are often overlooked in the legislative process.
America’s small businesses are facing significant challenges today: the implementation in just months of a sweeping new reporting burden (the NSBA-opposed Corporate Transparency Act), the expiration of critical small-business tax reductions and the ever-present challenge of finding access to capital. Additionally, small-business owners are wary of the disastrous threat of a government shutdown—particularly the millions of small businesses that do business directly with the federal government. NSBA stands ready to work with you, your team, and Chairman Williams to address these vital issues, and ensure that small business continues to serve as the backbone of our robust economy.
Congratulations again on your election as Speaker, I look forward to working with you on issues relevant to the growth and prosperity of small businesses.
Sincerely,
Todd McCracken
